Jubilee concert to mark 70 years of existence
Messa da Requiem

Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi

Sunday, 06. October 2024 - 14:30

Philharmonie Berlin (Great Hall)

At the height of his fame as an opera composer, Verdi gave the world and himself a gift of his own when he learned of Gioacchino Rossini's death in 1868. He encouraged six other Italian composers to write a joint Requiem with him, each of them one movement. Verdi contributed a ‘Libera me’. The performance did not take place. When the poet Alessandro Manzoni died in 1873, Verdi himself wrote all the remaining movements and thus brought his Messa da Requiem to the concert stage, an exceptional work for him, but also a monumental milestone in music history.

The Berliner Koncert Chor was founded on November 13, 1954 and is celebrating its 70th anniversary with its first concert in the 2024/25 season.   We would like to delight our audience with this outstanding musical masterpiece in a very special performance location, the main concert hall of the Philharmonie Berlin, where the choir has performed regularly and very successfully over many decades. We expressly thank the choir of the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Embassy Singers for performing the anniversary concert with us. We look forward to your visit and your participation.
