In a Sea of Sound

The Berliner Konzert Chor and the Cristin Claas Trio

Spring Concert 2018/19
Sunday, 19 May 2019, 5:00 p.m.
Passionskirche | Marheinekeplatz 1, 10961 Berlin

The Berlin Concert Choir is well known for its artistically exciting collaborations. For our spring concert on Sunday afternoon, May 19th—this year in a new venue, the Passionskirche in Kreuzberg—a fortunate stroke of fate has brought us together with the renowned jazz group the Cristin Claas Trio. The trio, whose members have  performed together for the past fifteen years, regularly performs its unique “song poetry” singularly and together in concert with larger choirs and orchestras. Our afternoon concert, under the direction of Jan Olberg, is titled: “In a Sea of Sound.”

In the first part of the concert, the Concert Choir and our Youth Choir will perform excerpts from the Swedish-American jazz composer Steve Dobrogosz’s Mass before making music together with the Cristin Claas Trio. On the program are songs from the trio’s eight albums, as well as a couple completely new compositions. Cristin Claas sings in German, English and her own onomatopoeic fantasy language, giving the Trio’s music, which ranges from art song to jazz and the symphonic, its own a special touch.

In the second half of the concert, the Youth Choir will perform two works of its own before both choirs come together once more to improvise with the Cristin Claas Trio—an absolute novelty for our classically-oriented oratorio choir.

This special constellation—the Berliner Konzert Chor under the direction of Jan Olberg, the Youth Choir under the direction of Olga Kisseleva and the Cristin Claas Trio—promises an extraordinary evening, a very special kind of musical encounter.
